What is coiling you ask, it’s a building method which can be used in a variety of ways.
The coiling technique goes way back, it’s been used as a method to make clay into vessels for many thousands of years. You roll out long sausages of clay and use them to build up walls of a piece, you can vary the shape of the clay piece by guiding the coils in and out whilst building.
There are different ways in which you can use coils...
Coiling for building
Coiling is a great technique to use to create large pots as it creates a good strong structure. Coiling also allows you to vary the shapes as you’re building so it can allow you to be free with your creation, changing it as you build. You can create both large and small using the same methods.
Coiling for decoration
You can create coils and attach them as extra decoration, this could be whole coils of clay or small pieces of coils attached in a pattern or decorative manner.
Decorative coiling whole piece
Coiling for decoration can give some beautiful results but you can even go as far as creating an entire piece out of coiling but with decorative intent. What I mean by this is that you don’t add coils to the outside of a pot you are creating a piece out of the coils as a highly decorative design.
If you'd like to try your hand at coiling book a workshop with me and you can play to your hearts content! What will you create?
